How You can Stay Safe during Your Business Trips?

Updated: Aug 17, 2022

The travel industry saw a major downturn due to the emergence of COVID-19. Fortunately, since then, vaccines have been developed, and economies have started to grow again. In response to these recent developments, businesses have returned to the norm of sending their workers on business trips. Work-related travelling, as a result of its recent comeback, has been rising steadily.

As you prepare for these business trips, do keep in mind that you are still traveling in a time of great social and political upheaval, healthcare crises, and unsettling climate events. It is still important for us to stay vigilant about our safety, and this is how you can do that:

Do extensive research on your destination

Besides visa requirements, local culture, COVID-related entry requirements and seasonal temperatures, you should also find out about dangers specific to your destination. These dangers can include significant climate events and social unrest. After which, you can stay away from these perilous locations and avoid landing yourself into trouble.

Plan for emergencies

Compile a series of phone numbers that you need in times of crises - your country's embassy, the local police, your office, your friends and your family. Share your schedule and documents to your office staff and family members. You can also produce copies of these documents and store them in multiple locations (such as your hotel safe and luggage) for greater accessibility.

Avoid compromising your health

Apart from receiving the mandatory vaccinations for your destination, carry additional medications and a first aid kit in case you fall ill or injure yourself.

Take note of dangerous areas at your destination

Beware of travel scams like overpriced taxi fares and fake public transport tickets. Book transportation in advance and only use legitimate rental or ride-share services, where there are no hidden charges. If you are travelling via public transport, look through the routes beforehand.

Beware of thieves

Travelers often fall prey to scammers and pickpockets. At first glance, requests by locals can seem innocent. However, these requests may be serving as a distraction so that they can steal your possessions. Store your precious belongings safely in places where it would be difficult for pickpockets to reach. Stay alert when a stranger reaches out to you - even harmless-looking kids can have malicious intentions.

Protect yourself against cybercrime

Ensure that your devices are connected to the web through a secure VPN. Steer clear of using free Wi-Fi networks. These networks expose you to cyber criminals who will be able to seal your personal data or even hack into your company's network.

Have another look at your company's travel insurance

Even after taking precautions, unforeseen circumstances may occur. Although business travel insurance cannot help in completely allowing you to avoid mishaps overseas, it can help you to lighten your financial burdens if these mishaps happen.
